One thing I would keep in mind is keeping a theme. So if you were making something about dragons you would edit things in that are associated with Dragons. i.e: fire, blood, etc etc. having a font that suits it is also important. I am no Professional graphics artist, but I did study Multimedia for 2 years, and picked up a few guide lines during that time.
