but why wouldn’t you just read the PM?? there’s no point to just marking it as read rather than just opening it anyway?

Really not needed, we don't want to play with the core MyBB code. If you want to mass get rid of the notifications you can click on the checkbox next to the PM(s) and just delete them and they'll be moved to Trash Bin if you're that worried about it.
