500kb is like more than 99% of sites
Some sites cap it at 20kb.
People have shitty internet
Having 10 posts on a page with 1 meg avatars makes it a 10+ mb page load
If you have fast net it won't affect you but it will affect those with poorer connects.
500kb is more than enough to have a decent high quality avatar.
Totally overkill for still images yet still enough to have decent length animated gif avatars.
If you reach the cap you need to optimise your images or gif (ezgif.com) more or your gif is just too long.
